2009 Jazzercise Fit & Fine Challenge Winner

2009 jazzercise fit & fine challenge winner

In May 2009, Jazzercise of Denton placed an ad in this publication looking for 20 women to take part in our Fit & Fine Challenge.  We were looking for women who needed to loose 15 pounds or more, improve muscle tone, reduce stress and develop better nutritional habits.   Each week the participants communicated with their designated Fitness Coach who provided them with nutritional information, motivation, weekly challenges and feedback.   At the end of the 12 week program, Katy Magee was the clear winner losing 32.5 pounds, 27.5 total inches, 6.5% body fat and lower her BMI 4.5 points. Darlene Turner, Center Owner and Franchised Instructor asked Katy a few questions about her experience.  Read on for her insights.

What was your reason/motivation for joining the Fit & Fine Program?

There was an ad in Lifestyles magazine at the perfect time in my life. I just had my third child and was very out of control with my weight and life. I was ready to make a change.

What kept you from trying jazzercise before?

Honestly, I didn’t even know there was a Jazzercise center in Denton. Even if I had known, I assumed Jazzercise required dancing skills, which I don’t possess.

Knowing now about the program, what would you say to someone who hasn’t joined?

You‘ve got to try it! It’s just so much fun, and it works!

What have you personally gained from jazzercise?

I’ve gained so many things. First, my confidence is back. That’s a great feeling. Second, Jazzercise is the best stress reliever. My family is happier and things run more smoothly because I’m less stressed.  Third, I physically feel good.  I don’t get out of breath like before, so going outside and being active is so much more enjoyable. And last, as a stay-at-home mom, getting out of the house and being around a group of motivating, positive and genuinely nice women is great for the soul.

How would you describe the jazzercise program to others?

Jazzercise is an enjoyable, rewarding, complete exercise program. The workout is different every time you go, so it never gets monotonous.

What is the most challenging aspect of jazzercise and what benefit do you get from facing that challenge?

When I first started, I was really out of shape. The workout was not easy. I had to do the low impact moves to get through the cardio, which was disappointing. But, the weight started to come off immediately, and as time went on my body was able to do the high impact moves, which helped me lose more weight.

How would you describe the class atmosphere and participants in the jazzercise program to someone who is considering attending?

The instructors are really fantastic. They love what they do, and they are incredibly motivating, positive, and energetic. I never felt judged by them. They really want to help you. They are also very knowledgeable about fitness and the human body. I learn something new at every class. Fellow members of Jazzercise have always been just as positive and supportive. There are women of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels participating, and we’re all there for the same reason, to get in better shape.
