Omega 3: The Gift of Nature That Keeps On Giving

by Cathleen Brazile RN, FNP-BC

Let me introduce you to the dynamic health benefits of Omega-3 oils. Remember Grandma’s remedy of cod liver oil? She touted it as the cure for all things. With the advent of wonder drugs and advertizing, cod liver oil was relegated to the long list of old wives tales……Until recent discoveries have unearthed an amazing revelation.  Cod liver oil and other forms of Omega 3 oil may be a supreme gift of nature.

Perhaps the best known benefit of Omega-3’s is its role in maintaining already normal range cholesterol levels. Researchers have found that there are also multiple medicinal cardiovascular benefits too. These naturally occurring fatty acids support heart health by thinning the blood, which helps reduce inflammation in blood vessels. Better circulation in the heart and veins result in an increase in HDL “good cholesterol” levels. This in turn assists in maintaining better blood pressure control and decreasing the development of heart rate irregularities. These cardiovascular benefits of Omega 3 would be reason enough for me to encourage my adult patients to take it. But that is just the beginning of nature’s omega 3 gift to us.

Omega 3’s amazing anti inflammatory properties lead to support of brain, nerve, and visual function by booting memory and mood.  Some studies have demonstrated that Omega 3’s  provide long term relief of symptoms of  depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia and dyspraxia. Other research has even shown that omega-3’s are shown to protect us from developing illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease.

While all this is impressive, there is still more. Omega 3’s such as fish oil, borage oil, flaxseed oil and krill oil also have been shown to prevent degenerative illnesses like, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, joint disease, and fibrocystic breast changes. One way experts say omega-3’s perform so many health “miracles” in people is by encouraging the production of body chemicals that help control inflammation — in the joints, the bloodstream, and the tissues leading to healthy blood vessels, organ tissue, skin and hair, and healthy joint function.

The best part of this multipurpose therapy is that it is available without a prescription. So visit your vitamin shop or drug store and start giving your self the gift of better health. I care about your health!
